Neuropsychology for Children and Teens
We partner with parents for their kids’ medical and psychiatric health
We know how frustrating and painful it can be if your child is having problems in school or at home and you don’t know why. Psychiatrists, pediatricians, and other medical professionals refer children and teens to our pediatric neuropsychologists when other tests or treatments haven’t pinpointed the issue.
Our neuropsychology team provides expert evaluations for children of all ages. We can rule out certain conditions, determine if a neurological condition is contributing to your child’s difficulties, and work with you on what to do next. We also partner with teachers for the purposes of educational planning.
Why is my child struggling?
Two of the biggest red flags for neuropsychological conditions in children and teens are a lack of progress at school and failing to meet developmental expectations that are appropriate for their ages. These factors can lead to problems for the entire family without proper attention.
Start the process with a neuropsychological evaluation for your child. Please call (313) 876-2526 to schedule a neuropsychology evaluation.
We evaluate children and teens with a number of medical and congenital conditions. Some of these conditions may be congenital, or present from birth, especially in children born preterm or from complex pregnancies. These conditions include:
- Congenital heart disease
- Genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome, Turner’s syndrome, and Tourette’s syndrome
- Hydrocephalus, or a buildup of fluid in the brain
- Neurofibromatosis
- Spina bifida, a type of congenital defect that occurs when a child’s spinal cord doesn’t develop properly during pregnancy
- ADHD*
- Uncomplicated ADHD can be diagnosed by your child’s pediatrician or psychiatrist based on history of symptoms and parent/teacher objective information. A neuropsychological evaluation can be considered if the child does not respond to behavioral (therapy) or medical treatment.
- Autism*
- We offer educational planning for a child already diagnosed with autism.
- If you are seeking diagnosis of Autism, this service is offered through out Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (CADD)
- Learning disorders
- Global Developmental Delay
- Intellectual disabilities
- Language delays
We also see kids with neurodevelopmental conditions, such as intellectual disability, global developmental delay, and language delays. Though testing for Autism is offered exclusively through CADD, some children with an autism spectrum disorder benefit from a neuropsychological evaluation to inform educational planning. Sometimes kids with other neurodevelopmental conditions, such as learning disabilities, can receive neuropsychological evaluations to help inform school planning.
How we can help
Our comprehensive assessment goes beyond psychological tests that may have been administered by your child’s school. Our independent, unbiased evaluations provide valuable information about your child so we can make the best recommendations for treatment. After the evaluation, we’ll provide guidance on accommodations your child may need to thrive at home and school.
