Your Child’s Neuropsychological Evaluation

How we test for conditions that cause kids to struggle at home or school

Neuropsychological evaluations give us insights into your child’s unique struggles in school or at home. The results help us recommend treatment for children and teens with neurocognitive conditions, which affect thinking, behavior, problem solving, learning, or attention.

Neuropsychological Evaluation Process

1st Appointment – Intake

Once our neuropsychology team receives a referral from your child’s school psychologist, pediatrician, or other medical professional, the process begins with a parent/guardian virtual consultation with a pediatric neuropsychologist. We’ll gather information about any problems the child is having at school and home, as well as other concerns you may have.

Next, we’ll provide paperwork for the child’s parents/guardians and teachers to fill out for further information about how your child functions at school and at home. Once we receive this completed paperwork, we’ll schedule the neuropsychological evaluation.

2nd Appointment – Testing

A neuropsychological evaluation may take between two to eight hours, depending on your child’s age and tolerance of the testing process. This appointment is in person. We encourage you to explain to your child that the evaluation will be like a school day.

During the evaluation, your child will complete a variety of tasks in a quiet, one-on-one setting with a pediatric neuropsychologist. These tasks include:

• Answering questions
• Completing puzzles
• Doing activities with paper and pencil
• Playing games

At the end of the day, we may have some preliminary information to share, but our full report takes a couple of weeks to process.

Be sure to bring something for you to do during the appointment. You will have paperwork to compete I the waiting room while your child is working, but there will like be several more hours of free time afterwards. Your child should take all their medications as usual the day of testing. Please bring snacks for your child during breaks (e.g., snacks); they cannot bring these into the testing room as it is distracting. If testing is takes longer than the morning, there will be an hour break for lunch. Please note that lunch is not provided.

3rd Appointment – Feedback/Results

We’ll schedule a virtual follow-up appointment two to three weeks after your child’s neuropsychological evaluation to go over the full results and provide recommendations to move forward in the best interests of your child. We will send a copy of the report to you through the patient’s MyChart account and we encourage you to review the results of this report with the child’s pediatrician.

Recommendations may include care from other medical professionals, steps to take at home, and strategies to share information with the child’s school. Children and teens with neurocognitive conditions often need special accommodations from their schools and teachers. We’ll share examples of what accommodations could benefit your child, how they can help, and how to request these services.
