Adult Neuropsychological Evaluations

What to expect from our comprehensive testing process

Neuropsychological evaluations help us make recommendations for patients who have neurocognitive conditions, which affect mood, thinking, or behavior, as well as neurological conditions. The results of these tests give patients, families, and doctors information to make decisions in a number of key areas, including:

  • Treatment plans, medication, and possible surgical procedures
  • Care or services from community resources
  • Living arrangements, including independent living, assisted living, or in-home care
  • Means to improve day-to-day functioning and returning to work, school, or sports

Adult Evaluation

Before the neuropsychological evaluation

Once we receive a referral from your medical or psychiatric provider, we review your medical records thoroughly. Next, we schedule an interview with you to learn about your concerns and issues. During the pre-evaluation period, we may interview your spouse or partner, as well as other family members who may be involved in your care.

During the evaluation

A neuropsychological evaluation takes five to eight hours. The time can vary depending on your specific condition.

You’ll complete several tasks on a computer and with pencil and paper in a quiet, one-on-one setting with one of our specially trained team members. We’ll test many different areas, including:

  • Ability to organize and plan
  • Attention and concentration
  • Emotional and behavioral function
  • Language abilities
  • Memory and learning
  • Reasoning, thinking, and understanding
  • Visual perception

Once the evaluation is complete, you can go home.

After the evaluation

We’ll add a copy of the results to your medical record. Your referring doctor will discuss the results with you and use the report to help confirm or rule out potential diagnoses and determine an effective treatment plan.

If you prefer, we’re happy to schedule an appointment for you to come back and review your report with our neuropsychology team. We also can provide you with a copy of your report if you’re interested in reviewing our findings.
