Stopping or preventing seizures with implants

Henry Ford Health participated in the clinical trial for the responsive neurostimulation (RNS) system, pioneering research that led to its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Post clinical trials, we have extensive experience placing these implants to treat seizures. Our neurosurgeons implant this neurostimulator device under the scalp with a minimal incision. We connect electrodes from the responsive neurostimulation device to the seizure focus and program the device to monitor your brain’s unique electrical patterns. When the system detects unusual activity, it delivers electrical pulses through the electrodes to stop or even prevent a seizure.

Houston, we have Detroit

Henry Ford Health and NASA partnered on the Advanced Diagnostic Ultrasound in Microgravity (ADUM) project, to train non-physician astronauts to perform diagnostic scans in space using real-time remote guidance from doctors on Earth. This technology can monitor astronauts' spinal health and assess potential trauma and injuries from space missions. Earthside, these techniques transfer to rapid evaluations for athletes and patients in ambulances, rural clinics and military fields.

We Are Henry
Whether it's the challenge of a marathon or the sprint to save lives with specialized care, these stories highlight what it means to be Henry.

For more than two decades, Brooke Wessman took great pride in working for Henry Ford Health. As someone who prioritizes healthy living — exercise, clean eating and routine screenings, Brooke received a colon cancer screening at age 45 with a Cologuard test. She was surprised when the results detected altered DNA and/or blood, a possible sign of precancerous polyps or colon cancer.

When Eric’s left bicep swelled up so large that it strained his shirt sleeve, he knew something was wrong. This sudden development was a shock to Eric, then 39, a West Bloomfield resident. He was healthy, had lived a very active life and his only previous medical issues were sports injuries when he was growing up. Following many tests, an ER doctor referred Eric to a vascular surgeon who was able to figure out what was going on and act quickly.

Lisa Smith had a history of abnormal thyroid labs since she was pregnant with her son around eight years ago. She also had a family history of thyroid disease, so when it was found that she had a nodule on her thyroid that was causing it to be hyperactive, she was not surprised. She was hesitant to undergo treatment because she would need to be on medication long term. But thanks to a new procedure, she and her doctor were able to take action she was comfortable with.
