Inpatient Physical Rehabilitation Guide
Arriving at Inpatient Rehabilitation
During your first few days, our team will evaluate your condition and create a plan. Your social worker and/or doctor will then talk to you about the team’s recommendations, including their estimate for how long you need to stay to regain function and accomplish your goals, and plans for your discharge. Our average length of stay is 14 days.
Inpatient Rehabilitation Rooms
Patients requiring isolation because of their medical condition are placed in a private room. We try to accommodate other requests for private rooms when we can, based on room availability.
Inpatient Meals
We offer menus with a variety of items for breakfast, lunch and dinner — including meals designed to meet physician-prescribed diets for patients with diabetes, cardiac or renal problems. Food is delivered via “room service,” meaning you order what you want when you want it.
Meals are included in your stay and we encourage you to eat at the dining tables in our Dayroom which overlooks the Detroit River. Your family or visitors may purchase food at the Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital cafeteria, Subway or Starbucks and dine with you.
You should consult with your nurse or doctor before eating food brought from home or by your visitors — especially if you have swallowing problems. If so, you may need specially prepared food and may need to follow special swallowing techniques. If you have special nutritional needs you might get a visit from a dietician or get asked to attend a nutrition class.
Daily Inpatient Rehabilitation Routine
You will be expected to attend therapy for 3 to 5 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Depending on your needs, you might also attend sessions over the weekend.
What to Wear for Inpatient Rehabilitation
It is best if you wear street clothes and shoes every day — especially clothing that is loose and comfortable. Sweat suits and tennis shoes are appropriate, although other styles worn at home are likely to work, too. Our occupational and physical therapists can provide further recommendations about what to wear.
Unfortunately, laundry service is not available, but hospital pajamas are available as needed.
Visitor Information
Unless otherwise stated for public health reasons, we have open visiting hours. We do suggest that you schedule visiting times so it doesn’t interfere with your therapy sessions. To help with your transition home, we expect that people who will help care for you receive training from our staff. We will coordinate training times with you and your caregivers. We also encourage those people to attend therapy with you as often as possible.
Dialysis and Radiation
If you need dialysis, you will receive it at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. If you need radiation or another off-site service, we will provide transportation to and from the appointments, making sure to coordinate with your therapy sessions.
Discharge from Inpatient Rehabilitation
Our goal is for every patient to return home. We work closely with you and your family to determine how to accomplish that. We have a proven track record of success, with 85% of our patients returning home. But we also have to keep your safety in mind, and we may recommend that some patients go to a nursing home or assisted living. If that’s the case, one of our social workers helps to make the arrangements.
Before you’re discharged, the rehab physician and therapy team will determine what outpatient services you may need. Depending on the services, you might get them at home or at a center such as our outpatient program. The decision is based on your needs, preferences and insurance coverage.
Rehabilitation Equipment for Home
Before leaving, you will receive information and assistance on getting recommended medical equipment for your home — items such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, walking aids, special bathtub seats or shower chairs. Our therapists and social worker will guide you and answer your questions.
