Each year, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO) participates in and is the beneficiary of two prestigious automotive design events:

• EyesOn Design car show: For more than 30 years, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology has sponsored EyesOn Design, an annual international exhibition that celebrates automotive design excellence of the past, present and future. This year’s event is Sunday, June 18, 2023 at the Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Mi.

• EyesOn Design Awards at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS): Based on the success of the summer car show, the DIO expanded the EyesOn Design format in 2005 to include an international awards program at the NAIAS, one of the industry’s most prestigious automotive design shows held annually at Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. Vehicles are judged by a highly distinguished panel of international automotive designers from various disciplines. Awards are presented to the finest examples of concept and production vehicles making their worldwide debut.

These two innovative events have united the worlds of automotive design, design history and journalism, drawing attention to the importance of design in the automotive world. All EyesOn Design events provide financial support and raise awareness of DIO's important work in research and support for the visually impaired.   

Crystal Awards

At each EyesOn Design event, vehicle designers and design teams have the opportunity to compete for one of the coveted Crystal Awards. Specially designed for EyesOn Design, the major awards are made of optical crystal of great purity with a very high index of refraction. Like the eye itself, these awards transmit and refract light in a spectacular manner. As with other aspects of the two events, these awards help to illustrate the connection between vision and the appreciation of the beauty of fine vehicle design.
