Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis Tests

Whether your doctor suspects that you may have breast cancer or you are simply getting a routine screening, our expert breast radiologists are here to provide you with quick and accurate testing. If your test shows you have breast cancer, our breast cancer team will work with you to come up with an advanced treatment plan.

Is a mammogram the only way to screen for breast cancer?

No. Mammograms are the most common way to screen for breast cancer. However, a traditional mammogram may not show small tumors in women who have dense breasts with high amounts of glandular and fibrous tissue.

We offer a number of advanced breast imaging tests to detect and diagnose breast cancer early. These tests include:

• Digital mammograms and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) mammograms for women with dense breasts
• Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
• Breast ultrasound, including automated whole-breast ultrasound (ABUS)
• Computed tomography (CT), including CT scans combined with positron emission tomography (PET/CT)
• Molecular breast imaging

Our specially trained radiologists read all mammograms and other imaging results. Our technologists also have completed additional training in mammography. If you need additional testing, our diagnostic nurse navigators will support you through the process.

In addition, if you or a close family member has a history of breast cancer, you may be a candidate for breast cancer genetic testing, which helps determine your risk for developing breast cancer based on inherited changes to certain genes.

What happens if my test indicates that I could have breast cancer?

Unusual results from a screening test could be a sign of breast cancer, or they could indicate a noncancerous form of abnormal breast tissue. The only way to know for sure is to have a breast biopsy. Your doctor may order one or more of the following types of biopsies:

• 3D breast biopsy
• Sentinel node biopsy
• Stereotactic breast biopsy
• Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy

We’ll get you the results of your breast biopsy within six days. It’s important to note that most patients who have a breast biopsy do not have breast cancer. Learn more about breast biopsies and what to expect.
