Our Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Team

The Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center at Henry Ford has three decades of experience in the medical and surgical management of Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, ataxia, and other neurological disorders that affect normal movement of the body.

Henry Ford offers comprehensive care utilizing medications, therapy, and assistive devices. The Center has participated in numerous clinical trials for new Parkinson’s disease and botulinum toxin medications. For patients not responding to medical therapies, deep brain stimulation and other surgical therapies are available. In fact, Henry Ford was the first in Michigan to perform microelectrode-guided deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat patients with Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. The Center is among the top in the world for experience in managing patients with DBS. The Center recently became the first in Michigan and the third in the world to place DBS electrodes using the ClearPoint system from MRI Interventions with intraoperative MRI (iMRI). This advanced technology permits procedures to be conducted under general anesthesia for those patients who can’t tolerate the procedure while awake or off medication.
