Infant Hip Ultrasound

Infant Hip Ultrasound is an exam that obtains images of the infant hip using sound waves. A hand-held transducer (probe) is used to create images of the infant hip. It can assist the doctor in diagnosing developmental dysplasia of the infant hip (hip dislocation).

Preparation

• Typically there is no prep for this procedure.
• Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment with a prescription if your doctor has given one to you.

Procedure

• The infant will lie on an exam table on the right and left sides.
• A non-greasy gel will be applied to the skin during the exam.
• The sonographer or radiologist will use a hand-held transducer (probe) against the right and left hips to obtain images.
• The images are taken with the infant in relaxed, bent and stressed positions of each hip for the assessment of hip dysplasia.

Considerations

• Infant must be at least six weeks old.
• Bring things to keep infant comfortable (i.e., bottle, blanket, pacifier).
