Comprehensive ophthalmology is a field dedicated to early detection and treatment of eye conditions.

Comprehensive ophthalmology services

In accordance with the recommendations of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), Henry Ford Department of Ophthalmology comprehensive ophthalmologists offer a wide variety of services, including:

• Thorough eye examinations and testing using state-of-the-art equipment
• Screenings for eye diseases and disorders
• Prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses
• Medically and surgically treating diseases of the eye and surrounding structures

When necessary, our comprehensive ophthalmologists also coordinate care with other Henry Ford Department of Ophthalmology surgeons and subspecialists, ensuring that our patients receive the most advanced treatment possible.

Do I need a comprehensive ophthalmology eye exam?

The AAO recommends that adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease receive a baseline eye disease screening at age 40 – the time when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to occur. Based on the results of the initial screening, a comprehensive ophthalmologist will explain how often you may need follow-up exams.

If you have any of the following risk factors, the AAO recommends checking with an ophthalmologist to determine how frequently your eyes should be examined:

• Experiencing symptoms of eye problems (for individuals of any age)
• A family history of eye disease
• Existing health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure

Do I still need to go to my other eye appointments?

The recommended baseline eye disease screening does not replace regular visits to the ophthalmologist to treat ongoing disease or injuries, or routine vision examinations for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Much like mammograms at age 40 or colon screenings at age 50, this comprehensive ophthalmology screening is a health care reminder to adults that, as they age, they are at greater risk for developing eye disease and need to be screened.
