LASIK

Laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a laser surgery that reshapes the cornea to improve vision.

LASIK surgery is the most common laser vision correction procedure, and it can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. LASIK is used to treat patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

How can I prepare for LASIK surgery?

Before LASIK surgery, you should stop taking certain medications, avoid alcohol and medications that cause drowsiness, and stop wearing contact lenses.

What happens during LASIK surgery?

During LASIK, your Henry Ford surgeon:

  • Creates a flap of corneal tissue, which is then folded out of the way
  • Uses a second laser to reshape the cornea, allowing light rays to focus more precisely on the retina
  • Repositions the corneal flap, which acts as a natural bandage and aids in the improvement of one’s vision

What happens after LASIK surgery

In general, LASIK surgery is not painful. Some patients report feeling mild pressure or vibration during the procedure. After LASIK surgery:

  • You may feel eye irritation for a few hours
  • Most patients can return to work the day after LASIK surgery
  • Most people can see better within seconds after the procedure and have good vision within a day or two after LASIK surgery
  • However, your vision may not reach its best level until a few weeks after LASIK surgery

Considering LASIK Eye Surgery?
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery is the most common laser vision correction procedure. It can improve vision and reduce reliance on glasses and contact lenses for people with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

LASIK and other refractive surgeries
