We want to make sure you and your loved ones have the information you need about inpatient psychiatric care. If you have a question that isn’t included below, please ask your doctor or nurses for more information.

What am I allowed to bring with me?

Generally, we recommend that patients bring a few changes of clothing when they stay with us. All of our inpatient locations have washers and dryers, so you'll be able to do laundry during your stay.

For security purposes, we recommend that you not bring any personal items that are expensive. We also recommend against bringing money or credit cards.

We do not allow patients to bring any items that could be dangerous or used to harm themselves or someone else, such as lighters or glass bottles. Ask the nursing staff for the most current list of items we do not allow in inpatient care.

When can my family visit?

We highly recommend and encourage family involvement in your care. Family members are welcome to visit during normal visiting hours, which vary by location.

When can I go home?

Your length of stay with us can depend on a number of factors, including specific symptoms. Our priority is to address your needs and concerns and get you back home as quickly and safely as possible to continue ongoing care on an outpatient basis.

If a patient decides to leave against their psychiatrist's medical recommendation, we may need to place a 72-hour hold on the patient's departure to make sure there's no danger to the patient or others. If there is a possible danger, that time may be extended.

What are the inpatient options for older patients?

We offer inpatient psychiatric care for older adults at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital’s Mt. Clemens campus. Our older adult unit serves the unique psychiatric needs of patients 55+ with no upper age limit. We often treat older patients who have behavioral disturbances associated with dementia.

Older patients have access to a consulting geriatrician, a doctor who specializes in the specific needs of older adults. Our nurses in this unit are specially trained to care for older adults.

At Henry Ford Macomb, we can provide a number of medical treatments patients while they stay with us, including IV therapy and wound care. In addition, patients in the older adult unit have access to occupational and recreational therapies specifically designed with the needs of older adults in mind.
