EM Residency

Greetings,

In July 2024, we will be transitioning to a three-year program accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with 30 residents (10 residents per year) and 12 core faculty located in Jackson, Michigan. We are continuing to offer four tracks which include ultrasound, sports medicine, EMS, and wilderness medicine but are not required. We wanted to give you some vital information to help answer some of your questions and allow you to make an informed decision for your future.

Henry Ford Jackson Hospital is a Level II trauma center with 420 inpatient beds serving around 20,000 inpatients per year. We also have 60 private treatment rooms in the ED, serving approximately 80,000 visits per year. The emergency room is staffed by Independent Emergency Physicians group which is an independent company based out of Farmington Hills, Michigan. Our goal is to teach you medicine as well as the administrative and business side of emergency medicine.

Our hospital is located approximately 30 miles south of East Lansing (MSU) and 30 miles west of Ann Arbor (U of M). We are close to I-94 which supplies many patients for our trauma experience. We are the largest hospital within a 30-mile radius allowing us to give care to the sickest of patients.

We have many specialties at our facility including cardiovascular, vascular, thoracic, plastics, general surgery, gastrointestinal, nephrology, cardiology, urology, orthopedics, anesthesia, ENT, hand surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, sports medicine, primary care, obstetrics, psychiatry and OMFS. We also house family medicine, psychiatry, general surgery, internal medicine, and transitional year programs here as well which means EM residents do not have difficulty obtaining procedures.

Michigan International Speedway is only a 30-minute drive from Jackson. MIS hosts NASCAR races and country music events. Many residents have taken part in event medicine at these activities. Moonlighting is also a possibility for senior residents if in good standing with the program.

We are fortunate to have social work and case management in the ED. Social work helps tremendously with our large psychiatric population. Epic is our electronic medical record and we do use voice dictation throughout the hospital. Our hospital provides free parking, a cafeteria stipend as well as a concierge service to help with things such as getting your car to an oil change, getting to the post office and running an errand.

Our program is nine years old and we have alumni residents all over the country. Some of our residents have gone on to participate in fellowship programs as well as leadership positions. Our alumni have a board-pass rate of 94%.

Training at a community hospital gives you the advantage of learning to be a well-rounded emergency medicine physician. Residents learn how to manage a patient with minimal resources as well as Level II resources. Our four-year program allows residents to become competent physicians and be able to run an emergency room giving them the tools to choose what type of hospital they would like to practice in.
