National Resident Matching Program

Applicants should be registered in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) to be considered for the Henry Ford Health residency program. The NRMP uses computers to match prospective students and hospitals according to student needs and preferences. For information, please contact:

Appointments

Appointments to the residency program are made for one year and in most cases begin the last week of June of each year, permitting a few days of early leave at the end of the academic year. Henry Ford Health renews resident appointments annually, enabling the resident to fulfill training requirements specified by the respective American boards. Annual renewals are contingent upon satisfactory performance by the resident. In special instances, appointment to the residency program may be made at times other than the beginning of the academic year.

Those entering PGY1 in all programs are required to have taken the ACLS certification course prior to assuming ward duties. This course is offered at no charge to all incoming residents. In order to take this course, BLS certification is mandatory.

Employee Health Screening

All house officers must pass the pre-employment health screen. Testing positive for any substances including nicotine and marijuana is a failure to meet the conditions of employment and considered a violation of the Henry Ford Health employment contract and match agreement.

Flu shots

Henry Ford employees who work in clinical and non-clinical positions are required to receive an annual flu vaccination. This applies to all residents and fellows, as well as physicians, nurses, students, transporters, volunteers, housekeepers, clerical, lab and dietary staff and employees in non-clinical positions. Employees may only decline vaccination if they provide documentation of an acceptable medical or religious reason.

Licensure

All residents and fellows are required to be licensed to practice medicine by the State of Michigan. All PGY1 residents are required to obtain an educational license to practice medicine. The appropriate application will be provided to the candidate. Application for licensure must be made before training begins. Henry Ford Health will reimburse residents for the cost of the educational license. This educational license can be renewed up to five times.

Foreign Medical Graduates

Graduates of medical schools outside of the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada must present with their application a certificate attesting to successful completion of the examination given by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates plus verification of current visa status.
