Didactic Education

Weekly Protected Education Time

Emergency Medicine Conferences are held every Wednesday morning. They consist of oral board cases, EKG review, Radiology review, case presentations, core faculty lectures as well as guest lecturers.

Residents are placed in small groups for oral board cases proctored by a core faculty member. This allows for residents to work through a case step by step and practice participating in an oral board case with teaching points. EKG review is done in resident small groups with overview by core faculty. Each resident is asked to give a case presentation throughout the year with teaching points. Core faculty presents lectures on pertinent topics. Residents also attend EM department meetings on the 2nd Wednesday each month for mortality and morbidity case presentations.

Statewide Campus System (SCS)

Our residency program belongs to Michigan State University’s Statewide Campus in which 26 hospitals collaborate on emergency resident education. Monthly sessions are held virtually with different speakers and topics. SCS also offers various hand-on skill labs.

Scholarly Activity

Program requirements for residents include completing one Quality Improvement (QI) Project and/or one Scientific Research Project. Each resident must be the lead investigator on one of these two projects, while the other project can be in collaboration with other residents.

Journal Club

The residency hosts a quarterly journal club which is typically held off of the hospital campus in which residents and faculty discuss current literature published on a variety of topics.

Certification Courses

Emergency Medicine residents are trained and certified in various skills courses including Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
