Fellowship and Career Opportunities

Our goal is to prepare you for your future careers. We wish to find whatever area you are passionate about and help you to find a position that will allow you to provide excellent patient care in that setting.

  • Career and Fellowship workshops starting in your second year
  • Integrated "professional development" curriculum throughout residency designed to educate and advise residents on job opportunities and contract structuring after residency.
    • Talks are given by experts in the field, including current hospitalists and faculty
  • Early sub-specialty exposure and ability to foster relationships with faculty
    • General practice floors are specialty focused, with monthly rotations in Nephrology, Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonary medicine, and more!

Fellowship Match

Almost 2/3 of our residents go into fellowships. We strive to give you the skills and opportunities to meet your goals.

Mentoring

The program has many opportunities for mentorship and coaching with formal and informal mentorship geared to help our residents achieve their professional and personal goals. Our diverse faculty and support staff are committed to partner with you and help achieve your goals: whether residents are seeking guidance for a specific research project, career planning, working on personal goals and striking work-life integration, or anything else.

Formal mentoring

  • Associate Program Director "Teams": When our residents first step foot on the campus of HFH, they are paired with a "Team" which consists of an APD lead, clinical faculty in the various divisions within Internal Medicine (Cardiology, Nephrology, Oncology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease), and co-residents. The teams are designed to facilitate the coaching of residents toward their personal and academic goals, with protected time offered monthly to coordinate these meetings.
  • Research Mentorship: Our residents have the opportunity to specify fields of interest in post-graduate training or clinical practice as soon as they begin their residency training. With direct support of Dr. Kausik Umanath, MD MS, they are then matched with division research leaders to garner research experience ranging from conference presentations, to manuscript publications. Additionally, they have the opportunity to work directly within the Department of Internal Medicine in quality improvement initiatives throughout the program.
  • Program Director/Associate Program Director Semi-Annual Meetings: These serve as a chance to discuss your progress, set goals, explore career goals, find opportunities to reach your goals, provide feedback, and discuss your experience as a resident.

Tracks

Residents have the opportunity to engage in one of three tracks. Residents will attend monthly meetings, participate in a capstone project, and will be paired with a mentor for career/personal development. At the completion of their training, trainees will be provided a certificate for their active participation.

  • Research Track
  • Medical Education Track
  • Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Track
  • Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Track

Other Opportunities

  • Global Health Opportunities
  • Henry Ford Innovation Institute
  • Leadership Opportunities: There are multiple opportunities to represent the Internal Medicine Program on committees, leadership initiatives, representative groups in the Health System, Henry Ford Medical Group and Graduate Medical Education.
    • Internal Medicine Representative Committee (IMRC): Designed to construct and evaluate resident initiatives throughout the hospital, as well as provide feedback to the program about resident work-place. A first-hand opportunity to implement change within the program.
