A message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Internal Medicine program at Henry Ford Health – Detroit Campus, where history and excellence meet innovation. Established in 1915, we proudly hold the title of the oldest residency program in Detroit and one of the earliest in the United States. Our longstanding dedication to education, research, and patient care forms the bedrock of our training program, ensuring our graduates are highly sought after for fellowship and faculty positions.
At Henry Ford Health, we offer a dynamic residency experience that goes beyond just meeting clinical competencies. Our program is uniquely crafted to align with your individual career goals, providing a comprehensive curriculum and immersive clinical experiences that prepare you for the future of medicine. Our national reputation for producing graduates with high-quality clinical training attracts top-tier candidates from across the country. The Henry Ford Hospital Department of Medicine offers an ACGME-approved 3-year (PGY 1-3) residency program in Internal Medicine that leads to certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine. We also offer a 5-year Combined Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine (EM/IM) program, and a 6-year Combined Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Critical Care (EM/IM/CC) program.
Our campus, located in the vibrant heart of Detroit, serves a diverse patient population that spans various ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. This urban setting, coupled with our role as a tertiary care center, allows our residents to manage some of the most complex cases and engage with a myriad of pathologies, rare diseases, and advanced therapies, including transplant procedures.
We're proud to collaborate with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and Wayne State University School of Medicine, offering rich clinical experiences for third and fourth-year medical students. Our residents have the opportunity to mentor these students, engaging in both inpatient and outpatient electives that foster unique teaching experiences and professional growth.
Our commitment to educational excellence is further highlighted by our participation in the Education Innovations Project (EIP), earning us a distinguished 10-year accreditation from the ACGME. This recognition positions our program at the forefront of graduate medical education advancements, reflected in our impressive ABIM board pass rate of 95%, surpassing the national average.

What makes our program outstanding?
- Henry Ford Hospital - Detroit Campus is a quaternary care and transplant center which serves as our main training site. The hospital not only takes care of our local community but it is the flagship site for the Henry Ford Health System. This provides our trainees exposure to a large variety of pathology and a diverse patient population. Our program is set up for progressive responsibility with the goal for independent practice by the end of your training.
- Our faculty, part of the Henry Ford Medical Group, are a dedicated community of physicians and healthcare providers that will become your mentors, preceptors, peers and provide you with the resources to support your personal and professional growth.
- Our trainees have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of scholarly activity including research publications, committee membership, and presentation on both a national and international level.
- We have supportive and dedicated program leadership with the opportunity to “customize” your schedule due to our subspecialty exposure.
Henry Ford Hospital (HFH) has been involved in medical education from its founding in 1915. More than 900 medical students and more than 675 residents and fellows are enrolled in 50 accredited programs each year.

Aim of the Henry Ford Internal Medicine Program: To prepare each resident with a solid foundation in internal medicine, fostering a spirit of inquiry and graded responsibility. At the completion of our training, our residents will function autonomously. Understanding that we have individual personal and professional goals, our residents are encouraged to pursue a career in Internal Medicine or one of its subspecialties, irrespective of whether it follows a path of research, clinical investigation, academics, or outstanding clinical practice.
