Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

An endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (accordion procedure) is appropriate for individuals with a body mass index of more than 30.

What to expect

This non-surgical procedure is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. Your doctor will give you specific preparation instructions ahead of time, which you will need to follow before the procedure.

During the procedure

The physician will insert a thin tube with a camera (endoscope) from your mouth and into your stomach. The camera allows the doctor to see inside your stomach to make stitches that will limit the amount of food it can hold and the number of calories your body can absorb. The procedure takes about 90-120 minutes, and most patients are able to go home the same day.

After the procedure

You will remain in the hospital for about two hours. You may experience temporary nausea and will not be allowed to eat for eight hours. Following a liquid diet for two weeks, you will then gradually move from soft foods to a regular diet.

With a smaller stomach capacity, you will feel fuller while eating less and will feel less hungry between meals. The majority of your weight loss will occur within the first year. Typical weight loss with this procedure ranges from 15-25% of total body weight loss. In addition to losing weight, patients often experience lower blood sugar and improvement with weight-related chronic illnesses, including diabetes.
