Our Stroke Hospitals

Stroke care at our hospitals

You can receive rapid, life-saving stroke treatment at any of our hospitals, each of which has received a specific certification by the Joint Commission:

  • Henry Ford Hospital: Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital: Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center
  • Henry Ford Macomb Hospital: Primary Stroke Center
  • Henry Ford Jackson Hospital: Primary Stroke Center
  • Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital: Primary Stroke Center

We also have better outcomes after stroke treatment compared to other stroke centers.

What is a Comprehensive Stroke Center?

This Joint Commission certification recognizes the significant resources in staff and training to treat complex stroke cases. It is the most demanding certification that the Joint Commission offers. Henry Ford Hospital has been certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center since 2016 and is one of few hospitals that have been awarded this certification.

For this certification, we are required to have:

  • Advanced resources for the acute treatment of stroke patients available 24 hours per day, seven days per week
  • A dedicated neurocritical care unit
  • A high volume of stroke cases
  • Certified vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and vascular surgeons
  • Advanced practice nurses
  • Advanced neurodiagnostic tools
  • A system that optimizes the benefits of carotid artery procedures
  • Participation in stroke research

What is a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center?

This Joint Commission certification recognizes stroke hospitals providing endovascular procedures and post-procedural care. Henry Ford West Bloomfield has been certified as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center since 2019.

What is a Primary Stroke Center?

This Joint Commission certification recognizes stroke hospitals who provide the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes. Three of our hospitals have been certified as Primary Stroke Centers:

  • Henry Ford Macomb Hospital: This hospital has been a Primary Stroke Center since 2015. In April 2022, we began offering endovascular intervention for acute ischemic stroke treatment, a first step in the journey toward thrombectomy-capable certification.
  • Henry Ford Jackson Hospital: This hospital has been a Primary Stroke Center since 2016.
  • Henry Ford Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital: This hospital has also been a Primary Stroke Center since 2016.

Awards and honors

All five of our stroke hospitals have also been honored with the Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and the Get With The Guidelines Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
