Neurohospitalist Program for Inpatient Neurological Care
For patients requiring hospitalization for neurological conditions, having a specialized care team is of the upmost importance. The neurohospitalist program at Henry Ford Health was designed to make sure the providers you see during your hospital stay are the best for understanding your unique medical needs.
How are hospitalists and neurohospitalists different?
A hospitalist is a physician who sees patients during their time in a hospital. These doctors have a general understanding of many different medical conditions so they can care for the needs of a wide range of patients.
A neurohospitalist is a hospital-based provider that specializes in neurological conditions. They only see patients admitted to the hospital with stroke or neurological concerns.
How do neurohospitalists improve the inpatient hospital experience?
Neurohospitalists provide acute neurology care every day and are familiar with inpatient processes. They are prepared to handle even the most complex patient cases right away.
Because these conditions require a certain level of attentiveness and targeted care, having a provider who is fellowship-trained in the latest advancements in care is incredibly beneficial for patients. With the help of advanced practice providers (APPs), these teams provide rapid and efficient care when every second of your time in the hospital is critical for the health of your brain and nervous system.
Inpatient neurology care at Henry Ford with neurohospitalists
Currently, Henry Ford Health has neurohospitalist coverage at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and Henry Ford Jackson Hospital. This is designed to best accommodate the volume of stroke cases coming in through these hospital locations.
Once you are admitted to the hospital – either through the emergency department or for a consultation – you can expect to be evaluated by the neurohospitalist team. After your provider has reviewed your medical history, performed a neurological exam and reviewed imaging, they will continue to check in with you throughout your hospital stay to ensure your condition is improving.
Once you are ready to be discharged from the hospital, our neurohospitalists also help ensure an integrated transition into any follow-up care you may require. This may include clinic visits with one of our outpatient neurologists along with other specialty and primary physician you may see for care.
