When you come to the Henry Ford Sleep Disorders and Research Center, you will find some of the nation’s top sleep disorder specialists. Our physicians are actively involved in sleep medicine research, working to find new and better ways to diagnose and treat patients. Our caring team uses the most up-to-date scientific methods and comprehensive strategies to effectively treat all types of sleep disorders.

The comprehensive sleep solutions we offer

Thanks to the breadth of experience and expertise of our sleep medicine specialists, we are able to offer a variety of effective sleep disorder treatments. Many of the treatments available at Henry Ford are not widely available at other sleep disorders centers. Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment could include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I): At Henry Ford Sleep Disorders Center, we have doctors who specialize in treating insomnia using CBT-I. The process involves a series of counseling sessions during which patients learn a variety of techniques for improving their sleep.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy (CPAP): For patients with moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains the gold-standard solution. It requires wearing a mask over your nose and mouth. The mask is attached to a machine that adjusts the pressure of the air you breathe in and out to keep your airway open.
  • Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP): This treatment is similar to CPAP, but it delivers a lower pressure when you breathe out. BiPAP is used for sleep apnea patients who have a hard time breathing out with CPAP and for patients with certain pulmonary conditions, such as COPD or severe obesity.
  • Inspire® therapy: Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation is a FDA-approved device to treat obstructive sleep apnea. It is an implanted device with a wire that stimulates the nerve to the tongue, moving it (and the muscles attached to it) forward to keep the throat open.
  • Oral appliance therapy: A customized mouthpiece can be worn during sleep to help support the lower jaw and prevent backward collapse during sleep, to keep the upper airway open. This is fashioned by a specialized dentist and can be effective for patients with mild or moderate OSA.
  • REmede System® : This is an implantable device used to treat moderate to severe Central Sleep Apnea in adults. This implantable system stimulates a nerve in the chest (phrenic nerve) to send signals to the large muscle that controls breathing (the diaphragm). These signals stimulate breathing in the same way that the brain signals breathing.
  • Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be the best option to treat sleep apnea and snoring. Our sleep specialists will fully evaluate your condition to see if any surgical options are the right solution, including, but not limited to, tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, rearranging muscles in the back of the throat and soft palate, surgeries on the tongue, and surgeries on the jaw/facial skeleton.
  • Light therapy and melatonin: Patients with shift work sleep disorder and other circadian rhythm disorders often benefit from light therapy or melatonin. Both of those treatments can help your body adjust to new sleeping schedules.
  • Sleep medications: Our physicians can prescribe a variety of medications used to help treat narcolepsy along with the current most common sleep disorder diagnoses treated (insomnia, restless legs syndrome and REM sleep behavior disorder).
