Modified Barium Swallow (MBS DSS VFSS)

This procedure is done in conjunction with Speech-Language to evaluate the swallowing mechanism of the throat. The swallowing mechanism can be damaged by stroke or other types of diseases.

Preparation

• There is no prep as a standalone study, unless this exam is being performed with another study, in which you would follow those guidelines.
  
   

Procedure

• The exam is performed while the patient drinks barium or chews different types of food with barium and at the same time fluoroscopy (moving x-ray) is utilized.
• This exam takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
