Oral Pathology
When you or your dentist notice changes in your otherwise healthy mouth, you may be referred to an oral pathologist.
Any changes in the health of your mouth should get checked out. Even something that seems minor — like a new growth, bump, white or red spots, or a sore that’s not healing — could be a sign of disease.
What does an oral pathologist do?
At Henry Ford Health, our oral pathologists specialize in diagnosing and treating oral diseases.
If you have a new growth or tumor, our oral pathologist may take a biopsy (sample of tissue) and examine it under a microscope. Most oral growths and tumors are benign (noncancerous). Even if a tumor is cancerous, finding and treating it early leads to the best outcomes.
What conditions do our oral pathologists diagnose?
The oral pathologists at Henry Ford have the expertise to effectively diagnose a variety of conditions that affect your oral health. These include:
- Oral cancer
- Herpes of the mouth (cold sores)
