Program Aims

The aim of this program is to produce professional, board certified surgeons capable of providing competent, independent, and professional surgical care. The goals of this program are the following:

  • To provide learning experiences based on measurable objectives for the education of house officers during a five-year training program
  • To promote a broad understanding of the role of general surgery as it relates to other medical disciplines
  • To integrate the sciences applicable to general surgery with clinical experiences in a progressive manner
  • To provide the general surgery resident with progressive responsibilities, and preparation for the lifelong provision of comprehensive care to surgical patients
  • To develop the teaching skills of residents in general surgery
  • To develop the skills necessary for surgical problem solving
  • To develop professional leadership and management skills
  • To foster lifelong learning in medical education
  • To develop interest in and understanding of research in general surgery
  • To prepare the house officer to meet certification requirements of ACGME through the American Board of Surgery and the AOA through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery 
  • To prepare the resident for integration into their future community and health care environment
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the psychomotor skills required of a competent general surgeon
  • Teach basic surgical skills to medical students, interns, and other house officers within the context of the residency program
  • Collaborate effectively and share knowledge with multispecialty teams necessary for the care of surgical patients
  • Make sound, ethical, and legal judgments in the practice of general surgery
  • Provide cost-effective care to general surgical patients
  • Educate patients and their families concerning health care needs
  • Participate in opportunities for continuing education to promote personal and professional growth
  • Read, interpret, and participate in clinical research, where appropriate
  • Participate in community and professional organizations
  • Enable the resident to modify his/her behavior to feel confident and at ease in dealing with people of all persuasions, convictions, and attitudes
  • Develop a residents’ awareness of their own personality traits, personal capabilities, limitations, and comfort in dealing with patients, colleagues, friends and families
