Henry Ford's Radiation Oncology residency training program is extremely appealing to me for many reasons. Among the most prevalent is the fact that each attending provider is deeply involved in furthering resident knowledge of the field while also being very enjoyable to work with. Furthermore, the clinic work schedule is very conducive to providing ample clinical training opportunities while still providing time for furthering of education through reading relevant texts and preparing for program didactics/lectures. Lastly, the program is further strengthened by the fact that it affords its residents the opportunity to see a large patient variety; this can be attributed to the program being based in the downtown Detroit area. Detroit is not only a great place to work for that reason, but the rich history of the city coupled with its improved nightlife activities make it an enjoyable location to live/visit as well.

The warmth of not just the attendings and residents but also the clinical staff is what distinguishes our department. Everyone in the department, from the therapists to the medical physics team to the department chair, collaborates well and encourages the residents throughout their training.
Our clinical experience is enhanced by seeing a diverse spectrum of patients, using cutting-edge therapy modalities including the ViewRay, MR-Linac, the Varian Edge, and an MRI simulator, and attending intriguing multidisciplinary tumor boards.
If you're going to devote four years of your life to obtaining the necessary training for a future career, you should do so in an environment that fully supports you!

Henry Ford Radiation Oncology residency program has provided me great training opportunities. We are able to see a good variety and quantity of cases as well as a diverse patient population. There is a culture of collaboration within the department in which everyone, including other residents, nursing, physics, dosimetry, administration, and attending physicians, treats each other with respect. There are ample opportunities for both clinical and basic science research. We are also fortunate as well to have access to cutting edge treatments such as MR guided RT. Lastly, Detroit is an enjoyable place to live and has everything you expect from a major city including major sports teams, good restaurants and bars, and outdoor recreation areas.

The work environment at Henry Ford Radiation Oncology is great. All staff involved in patient care work as a team. For someone who is just starting training, the physics, dosimetry, therapy, and nursing teams have been very helpful. The cancer center is state of the art and there is no lack of diversity in pathologies that present to us. I believe that the key to succeed in training is collegiality amongst co-trainees and supportive faculty. Both factors are present here in our program. Most importantly, the program director and coordinator truly care about the well-being of the residents.

Henry Ford provides exceptional training as a leader of cancer treatment in Detroit. We are exposed to diverse cases from all disease sites and have the privilege to treat one of the most underserved patient populations. Additionally, we are provided opportunities to train at multiple sites and even conduct research abroad. Attendings are very approachable, and they care about us residents as a whole person. Furthermore, the physicists and dosimetrists are always enthusiastic to be involved in resident education as well. The program is responsive to our feedback and tries to gear didactics towards our interest. The workload is manageable, especially with the help of APPs for inpatient consults. This residency program allows plenty of time for independent studying, research, and to explore Detroit! We have a good camaraderie here and we enjoy exploring Detroit together on weekends!
