Thank you for your interest in the ACGME accredited Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery fellowship (URPS) at Henry Ford Hospital/Wayne State University. Our program accepts one trainee each year, into either a two-year (Urology) or three-year (OB/GYN) track. The URPS fellowship functions as an integral component of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency program. The fellowship program has been accredited since 2012.

Program Aims:

The Urogynecology & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Fellowship Program at Henry Ford Hospital, is a community-based program. We strive to train FPMRS fellow clinicians to be:

  1. Academically and clinically competent clinicians in all aspects of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery;
  2. Competent to perform quality clinical research in URPS.

Educational Curriculum

The program offers access to faculty with expertise in a variety of specialties as they pertain to the field of FURPS, including vaginal, abdominal and endoscopic reconstructive surgery, pelvic floor anatomy, genitourinary and rectovaginal fistula repair, urodynamics and cystoscopy, multiple treatment modalities for urinary incontinence, integrative medicine in urogynecology, and urologic, colorectal and plastics procedures.

Fellows are expected to attend weekly educational conferences, didactics and monthly grand rounds incorporating teaching cases and journal club.

Research

Henry Ford Health is nationally-recognized for both clinical and basic research. Our academic health center is the leading non-university recipient of research funding ($80 million) in Michigan and is in the top 20% of NIH-funded institutions nationally. Hands-on research experience complements fellow education; thus, every fellow is expected to finalize a research project with a manuscript and oral presentation. Research is protected time. Fellows are required to take a graduate level biostatistics course. Funding and biostatistician support are available through GME.

Fellows receive support to attend academic conferences if they are presenting a paper or an abstract in which they are listed as the first author. Fellows attend American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) & Society of Gynecologic Surgeons (SGS) conferences.

Fellow Wellness

With the leadership of Dr. Lisa MacLean, past Program Director for Psychiatry and Assistant Dean for Students, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Henry Ford is using a The Physician Well-being Index, developed by the Mayo Clinic, to allow physicians to self-monitor themselves. This is being complemented by monthly “Wellness Rounds”. The “We Care” program is intended to help physicians and physicians in training is to maintain optimal health and well-being through education (strategies to maintain health and wellness), peer support, timely assessment of needs, and resources for healing.

The “We Care” Physician Wellness Program demonstrates a commitment to the well-being of our physicians in helping them achieve greater satisfaction in their careers and in their personal lives.
