Wellness
The radiology department, and Henry Ford Health as a whole, consider resident wellness a priority. Our program has gone above and beyond to provide residents with comprehensive, research-based wellness programming and resources. The institutional wellness curriculum at Henry Ford Hospital includes monthly "Wellness Rounds," where topics such as developing empathy, resilience, financial literacy, physician burn-out and suicide are addressed by dynamic and engaging speakers. Themed "Resident Appreciation Events," such as summer time ice cream social, Valentine’s Day hot chocolate bar, Eat-Well-Be-Well Mediterranean catered lunch, baseball-themed "coney dog" cart, and team trivia nights, are popular with residents. Radiology residents also enjoy department-subsidized social gatherings at local restaurants or residents’ homes and Friday afternoons often include trips to local breweries after work. The radiology department also boasts a successful resident and faculty soccer team within the hospital's soccer league.
Radiology residents not only participate in these wellness initiatives, but also help design and implement them. For example, in the 2020-2021 academic year, radiology residents served on the system-wide Resident Wellness Taskforce and the hospital-wide House Staff Council. Additionally, the radiology department has its own Resident Wellness Committee composed of residents from each academic class and led by passionate radiology faculty. Specific events or topics addressed this academic year by our own department Wellness Committee include:
- Grand Rounds with nationally recognized invited speakers
- Financial planning and personal insurance coverage post-residency
- Academic vs. private practice - insights into work-life integration in different work environments
- Ergonomics at the workstation
- Nuts and bolts of medical malpractice
- Noon walking group
- Health care disparities in radiology
The COVID-19 pandemic has elevated Henry Ford Hospital's commitment to physician well-being. During this time, additional resources, such as COVID Stress and Resiliency Workshops have been created. Existing resources, such as confidential 1:1 physician-focused therapy and counseling services, have been expanded.
Our program and health system also believe that in order to foster a culture of wellness it is imperative to embrace and celebrate the experiences of all members of our department. We aim to leverage the perspective of diverse members of our department and we strive to foster an inclusive, supportive, and equitable community of colleagues, radiologists, mentors, and friends. Henry Ford Hospital has recently been ranked in the top 15 hospitals in the nation for employer’s commitment to diversity and equity.
The radiology department and Henry Ford Hospital consider wellness an essential component of medical training. As with any other medical science, we pledge to continue innovating and improving our catalog of offerings to improve resident wellbeing at Henry Ford Hospital and are open to suggestions and feedback.
