What is the size of your division?

The IR division is staffed with 11 fellowship trained and board certified physicians, 2 Nurse Practitioners, 1 Physician Assistant, 25 IR nurses, 2 Clinic nurses, 8 PICC nurses, 16 technologists, and 5 coordinators.

What documents are required for application?

Is this a categorical or advanced program?

Categorical 6 year program

Is there a minimum GPA or USMLE/COMLEX score?

There are no minimum score requirements. All aspects of the application are considered when granting interviews and for resident selection.

Can you tell me about the ESIR program?

ESIR training is completed during a Diagnostic Radiology residency. It requires at least eight interventional radiology rotations, one ICU rotation, and up to three interventional radiology-related rotations during the R1 (PGY-2) - R4 (PGY-5) years. It also requires at least 500 Interventional Radiology procedures. Henry Ford has two ESIR positions each year. Internal applications are accepted at the end of the R2 (PGY-3) year.

Is there a research requirement for residents?

  • Our Department has a long history of producing quality research. Scholarly activity is strongly encouraged throughout the residency.
  • As first author you can receive up to a $1500 dollar stipend for each national meeting in which you participate.
  • During your training, in addition to participant travel days, you are also given 5 nonparticipant days to attend meetings.

What is the last day for applying to the program?

There is no last day for applying to the program. However, please note that interviews are granted on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

When do you send out interview invites?

Interview invitations begin shortly after ERAS opens and continues until all interview positions are filled. We strongly encourage applications to be complete and available the first day ERAS opens to programs.

When are interviews conducted?

Late October through mid-January

Can you tell me about call experience?

  • As a resident you work independently creating full preliminary reports on all imaging modalities. After submitting the report, an on-site staff reviews and finalizes your case. The staff are always available to discuss cases.
  • You are eligible for Diagnostic call at the end of your R1 year.
  • We are unique in that non-Nightfloat call is considered internal moonlighting.
  • Shifts include:
    • Weeknights 5-9pm (10 shifts in a 6 month block)
    • Weekend Neuro call 7-3pm (Variable 1-2 per block)
    • Weekend ER shift 7am-9pm (2 per block)
    • Weekend Diagnostic CT 7am-9pm (2 per block)
    • Weekend body CT procedure call 7-3pm (Variable 1-2 per block)
  • IR call is done only during IR rotations. During these months, call is generally 1 day per week and 1 weekend per month.

How does Diagnostic night coverage work?

  • Night hours are from 9 pm-7am
  • First year residents have 1 block/week of night float, third year residents have 3 blocks of night float, and second and fourth year residents have 4 blocks of night float.
  • You are assigned with another resident
  • Submit preliminary reports that are reviewed by onsite staff (no staffing of studies in the morning).

Can you tell me about intern year?

  • As a categorical program you will do your intern year at Henry Ford
  • The IR-Integrated intern year is different than the DR program and customized to best meet the educational needs as an Interventional Radiologist. You will do three Diagnostic Radiology rotations during which you will fully functioning radiology resident submitting reports. You will also have Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Acute Care Surgery, Surgical Intensive Care, inpatient Internal Medicine, and one consult month.

Do you sponsor J-1 or H-1 visas?

  • We do not sponsor H-1 visas. The institution does sponsor J-1 visas.
