Training prerequisites for selection include satisfactory completion of an ACGME or AOA accredited internal medicine residency. Fellows are selected based on the quality of their previous training, letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, research accomplishments, personal statements, and personal interviews. Three fellows are accepted each year into our training program.

Graduates of medical schools outside of the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada must present with their application a certificate attesting to successful completion of the examination given by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, plus verification of current visa status.

No smoking policy

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, HFHS will no longer enroll/hire fellows who use products containing nicotine. The nicotine test will be administered as part of the pre-employment health screen. Testing positive is a failure to meet the conditions of employment and considered a violation of the HFHS employment contract and match agreement. Applicants who test positive for nicotine will not be allowed to start their program. They may be re-tested in 90 days, but programs will not be obligated to hold the position for the applicant.

National Resident Matching Program

Applicants should submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to be considered by the Henry Ford Health System fellowship program.
ERAS requires the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • Medical school transcript
  • Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, LMCC, COMLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX or NBME)
  • Recent photograph
  • Valid ECFMG certificate (if you graduated from a foreign medical school)

During the 2022 recruitment cycle, interviews will be held virtually from August through October. Interviews are scheduled by invitation only and are arranged by the Program Director after a review of all credentials.


Appointments to the fellowship program are made for one year and in most cases begin the last week of June of each year, permitting a few days of early leave at the end of the academic year. Henry Ford Health System renews fellowship appointments annually, enabling the fellow to fulfill training requirements specified by the respective American boards. Annual renewals are contingent upon satisfactory performance by the fellow. In special instances, appointment to the fellowship program may be made at times other than the beginning of the academic year.

Flu shots

Henry Ford employees who work in clinical and non-clinical positions are required to receive an annual flu vaccination. This applies to all residents and fellows, as well as physicians, nurses, students, transporters, volunteers, housekeepers, clerical, lab and dietary staff and employees in non-clinical positions. Employees may only decline vaccination if they provide documentation of an acceptable medical or religious reason.


All incoming fellows are required to apply for permanent Michigan licensure at the earliest possible date. Such licensure for fellows requires satisfactory completion of three years in an AMA-approved training program in the U.S. The hospital defrays a portion of the cost incurred by the fellow in obtaining a permanent Michigan license.
