The Structural Heart Disease Interventional Imaging Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital is a one year non-ACGME accredited advanced fellowship training program available to those who have completed training in general cardiology. The program consists of 4 full-time Structural Heart Interventional Cardiologists and 2 full-time Structural Heart Interventional Imaging Cardiologists. The program is available to 1 advanced structural heart interventional imaging fellow per year. The program is designed to train fellows to independently guide non-coronary cardiac interventional procedures including transseptal crossings, percutaneous PFO closure, percutaneous ASD closure, percutaneous VSD closure, percutaneous alcohol septal ablation, percutaneous mitral and aortic balloon valvuloplasty, percutaneous closure of paravalvular leaks, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR), transcatheter repair for mitral interventions (ie MitraClip/TEER interventions), transcatheter tricuspid interventions, percutaneous left atrial appendage closure, using advanced intraprocedural 3D TEE guidance, and advanced peri-procedural Structural CT planning. Fellows will work alongside established Interventional Imaging physicians in the field of SHD to learn how to synthesize datasets for peri-procedural guidance, monitor for intraprocedural complications and evaluate short and long-term device efficacy.

Fellows will receive intensive hands-on exposure for intra and periprocedural transesophageal echocardiographic (TEE) guidance of transcatheter procedures, in-depth peri procedural SHD computed tomography (CT) segmentation/case planning, and gain exposure to patient device selection suitability for intraoperative procedures. Fellows will be trained to understand evolving technologies and the clinical decision-making pathway between selecting repair versus replacement methodologies for transcatheter interventions with regard to each patient’s specific pathology. Fellows will be actively involved in clinical research and have the opportunity to assist in the education of general cardiology fellows. Fellows will also have exposure to Cardiac Coronary CTA training and Cardiac MRI.

Fellows will be provided the opportunity for mentoring and hands on learning at a world-renowned tertiary high-volume center which provides the breadth of transcatheter procedures (TAVR, transcatheter mitral repair/replacement, tricuspid interventions, LAA closures, paravalvular leaks, and more).

  • Participate in the weekly multi-disciplinary TAVR conference with the Structural Heart Team comprised of Structural Interventional Cardiologists, Structural Interventional Imaging Physicians, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, and Heart Valve Team personnel.
  • Participate in the weekly multi-disciplinary Mitral conference with the Structural Heart Team comprised of Structural Interventional Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Structural Interventional Imaging physicians, Heart Failure and Heart Valve Team specialists.
  • Participate in clinical research and scholarly writing involving Structural Heart Interventional Imaging.
  • Actively assist and participate in Structural CT scanning protocols, CT technologist training, and quality improvement with Cardiothoracic Radiology.
  • Upon completion of training, fellows will develop a level of expertise which allows for independent echocardiographic guidance and peri-procedural CT planning for Structural Heart Interventions.
