What does a pharmacy technician do?

Pharmacy technicians assist licensed pharmacists with preparing and distributing prescription medications. They help to:

  • Fill orders for patients and ensure they are delivered to the right hospital units.
  • Compound solutions, suspensions, creams, ointments, elixirs, capsules, tablets and suppositories. This involves weighing the ingredients and mixing them appropriately.
  • Package and label compounded drugs.
  • Deliver medicines to nursing units (for those who work as an inpatient pharmacy technician).
  • Distribute prescriptions to customers (for those who work as an outpatient pharmacy technician).

As an entry-level role, pharmacy technician wages begin at approximately $17 per hour. This is a skill set that creates many opportunities within the pharmaceutical field.
