After Your Surgery

After the surgical procedure is completed, the patient is taken to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (recovery room) where strict monitoring occurs for the patient's every need. The Anesthesiology team will continue to care for the patient in conjunction with the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit team for management of pain, nausea, vomiting, and other conditions that might arise as the patient awakens.

After the required management in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, patients will be transferred to a hospital room whereas ambulatory surgery patients not requiring a longer stay may be discharged home. Ambulatory surgery patients are discharged home only after all Post-Anesthesia Care Unit patient goals are met.

While each patient remains in the hospital, the Anesthesiology team will care for pain management needs and other related anesthetic needs. Surgical patients who remain in the hospital longer than 24 hours will be visited by the Anesthesiology team to discuss the patient's experience and any additional requirements. The Anesthesiology team will ask questions about how the patient is feeling in relation to the type of surgical anesthetic received and any pain control issues.

The Anesthesiology team cares for every aspect of the patient's anesthetic surgical experience to provide the safest, highest quality care throughout the patient's surgery and hospital recovery.
