Dermatopathology

The key to accurately diagnosing skin conditions.

When you have a skin condition, we have the expertise to diagnose and treat it.

Our dermatologists work alongside specialists called dermatopathologists. These doctors play a critical role in giving you the most complete diagnosis.

What is a dermatopathologist?

A pathologist is a doctor who specializes in analyzing the body’s tissues, cells, and fluids. Pathologists make sure lab tests are accurate and interpret their results to correctly diagnose diseases.

A dermatopathologist is specially trained in dermatology. These specialists analyze patients’ skin and tissue samples to diagnose dermatology conditions.

Why are dermatopathologists important?

There are some symptoms that are common in many skin conditions, such as:

  • Flaky skin
  • Peeling skin
  • Redness
  • Swelling

It’s important to know the specific disease that causes particular symptoms. Some skin conditions, such as moles change their appearance, could even be a result of skin cancer.

Treating these diseases depends on having an accurate diagnosis. Because our skin doctors and dermatopathologists work together, we’re able to coordinate test results and clinical examinations. This lets us create the best treatment plan possible for each patient.

Does every dermatology practice include dermatopathologists?

Unfortunately, no. But our dermatopathologists consult with other doctors throughout the region on tissue analysis. They also teach their skills to other doctors, both in our area and nationwide.

You may not see our dermatopathologists during your visit. But they constantly work behind the scenes to help us provide exceptional care to our patients.
