Sinus Conditions and Treatments
Henry Ford Health offers some of the most advanced sinus care in the Detroit metro area. Our ENT doctors carefully evaluate your symptoms, diagnose your condition and determine the best course of treatment.
Understanding your sinuses
The sinuses are hollow cavities in the skull between the facial bones. There are four pairs of sinuses including:
- Maxillary sinuses in the cheekbones
- Frontal sinuses in the forehead, above the eyes
- Ethmoid sinuses between the eyes and extending into the nasal cavities
- Sphenoid sinuses at the back of the nasal cavities, behind the ethmoid sinuses and the eyes
The tissue lining of the sinuses (mucosa) produces mucus. Inflamed or infected mucosa can become swollen or produce excess mucus, causing nasal and sinus symptoms.
Sinus conditions we treat
Different sinus conditions can cause similar symptoms. A proper diagnosis is essential to getting the right treatment. Our ENT doctors treat a wide range of conditions, including:
- Deviated septum
- Enlarged turbinates
- Rhinitis
- Acute sinusitis
- Chronic sinusitis
- Tooth-related (odontogenic) sinusitis
- Sinus headaches
- Sinus and nasal tumors
Sinus conditions diagnosis and treatment
Our doctors can diagnose most nasal and sinus conditions during an endoscopic examination. An endoscope is a special tool used to see inside the nose. Some of our specialists have their endoscopic tools connected to a computer screen so you can see inside your nose during the exam.
Your diagnosis can result in different treatment plans. For example, your rhinologist may:
- Recommend allergy testing for rhinitis
- Recommend nonsurgical treatment such as steroid nasal sprays, antihistamines, decongestants, allergy shots and more
- Perform endoscopic sinus surgery to treat sinusitis that doesn’t respond to nonsurgical treatments
- Perform intranasal cryotherapy for rhinitis that doesn’t respond to nonsurgical treatment
