Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

A Hysterosalpingogram is an x-ray test done with the OB-GYN/Infertility Specialist or radiologist to view the uterus and fallopian tubes.

Preparation

• Schedule between days 7 through 12 from the start of your menstrual cycle.
• Cannot be during the heavy bleeding days of your menstrual flow.
• Abstain from sexual intercourse during that menstrual cycle and for 24 hours after test is completed.
• Eat a light breakfast, and nothing to eat after breakfast.
• Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment with a prescription if your doctor has given you one.
• Doctor may require a pregnancy test prior to exam.

Procedure

• Patient is positioned as for routine pelvic exam and a speculum is inserted.
• A small catheter is inserted (vaginally) through the cervix into the uterus. A contrast media is injected into the uterus.
• Under fluoroscopic x-ray, the uterus and fallopian tubes are visualized as they fill with contrast. X-ray images are obtained.
• A cramping sensation during and after the procedure is common as well as some spotting.
• The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes.
