Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The procedure is done without anesthesia as an alternative to traditional radiology procedures.

Henry Ford was the first health system in Michigan to offer prostate artery embolization. Our experienced Interventional Radiologists have performed more PAE procedures than any other health system in the state. We work with the Vattikuti Urology Institute at Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital to give you comprehensive, coordinated care.

Who is a candidate for PAE?

PAE is used when medications aren't enough to to manage prostate enlargement. You may be a candidate for PAE if the following symptoms are impacting your quality of life:

• Blood in the urine
• Frequency (the need to urinate often)
• Nocturia (getting up in the middle of the night to urinate)
• Urgency (a sudden, compelling urge to urinate)
• Weak stream

What to expect

Prostate artery embolization involves partially blocking off the blood supply to the prostate with the use of microscopic spheres, causing the prostate to shrink over time and relieve symptoms.

The procedure my take 1- 4 hours, depending upon the location and size of the prostate arteries. Most patients go home the same day.
