Magnetic Seed Localization
Magnetic Seed Localization (MSL) is a new wire free technique to help Radiologists and Surgeons localize breast abnormalities for tissue removal. Magseed (size of a grain of rice) is inserted into the abnormality under image guidance, prior to surgery day. This flexibility simplifies the scheduling for patients, and allows you to go straight to the OR on the day of surgery, reducing your time in hospital and the number of procedures you need on the day of surgery. This procedure is available at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, Henry Ford Medical Center - Fairlane and Henry Ford Health Center - Brownstown.
Procedure
- Mammogram or Ultrasound will be done to precisely locate the area of concern. Magseed will be placed in the area of abnormality that will be removed. Several images will be done to make sure the Magseed is placed properly in your breast. This will mark the area for your Breast Surgeon to remove on your future surgery date.
- The Magseed will be removed at the time of surgery along with the surrounding abnormality during surgery.
Preparation
Outpatient surgery will contact you regarding specific instructions on how to prepare for your exam.
