What is epilepsy? What is a seizure?
Epilepsy is a neurological (brain and nervous system) disorder in which surges of electrical activity in the brain cause repeated seizures. These sudden, uncontrolled bursts of electrical activity can affect your behavior, sensations, movements or level of consciousness.
More than 3.4 million Americans live with epilepsy, and 150,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. People can be born with epilepsy, or it can occur after a brain injury, such as trauma or stroke.

National recognition: The National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) has certified the epilepsy program at Henry Ford Hospital as a Level 4 Adult Epilepsy Center and the program at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital as a Level 3 Pediatric Epilepsy Center.
