Scar Revision

Scar revision minimizes and improves the appearance of scars from injury, surgery and burns. Keloids and thick, raised scars can be also be improved.

At the Henry Ford Center for Cosmetic Surgery we offer a range of surgical and non-surgical treatment options for minimizing scars. Surgery for scars caused by injury may be covered by insurance. Treatment selection depends on the severity of the scar and the location on the body.

Scar revision treatment options

• Laser Resurfacing: High-energy laser light therapy helps to remove scarred skin. The body's natural production of collagen is activated, resulting in smooth, elastic new skin.
• Subcision: Many acne scars are caused by remnants of acne cysts which "tether" or pull the skin down, giving it a rolling, dented appearance. Subcision is a dermatologist-developed technique to free the tethered bands and improve rolling scars.
• Excision and Grafting: Certain types of scars, including "ice-pick" scars or deep pits, respond best to surgical excision. This is performed with precise instruments and micro-fine sutures.
• Chemical Peels: Often used to minimize sun-damaged skin, irregular skin color (pigment) and superficial scars, chemical peels result in removal of the top layer of skin. When the skin regenerates, a smooth, even complexion results.
• Fillers: Scars sometimes cause deep depressions in the skin. When injected beneath a scar, filler products, such as Juvederm or Restylane, add volume to fill the depression.
• Cortisone-like Injections: These products are often used to soften and shrink hard scars.
• Cryosurgery: By freezing the top layers of skin, cryosurgery causes the skin to shed, shrinking the scar tissue.
