What can I expect at my balance function test appointment?

  • The test takes up to 2 hours to complete.
  • The balance function test is made up of several different tests that will help figure out what is causing your dizziness or imbalance symptoms.
  • These tests will not cause any pain.
  • You will have a Videonystagmography (VNG) or Electronystagmography (ENG) as part of your appointment.
    • These tests measure your eye movements.
    • A gentle stream of warm or cool air is put into each ear for about one minutes. This should cause the eyes to move in certain ways.
    • The test can sometimes make you feel like you are moving. That lasts about 2 minutes.
  • Other tests will be done based on your symptoms and VNG or ENG results.
