REACH Fitbit

REACH-Fitbit is a fun, new sub-study of REACH where participants are gifted a Fitbit activity tracking device.

Why REACH-Fitbit?

Physical activity during pregnancy can boost mood and reduce the risk of pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes. Participants in this study were gifted a Fitbit Charge to wear throughout their pregnancy. Participants were able to see their habits and activities on a personal dashboard and after the study finished, the Fitbit was theirs to keep.

Anonymous Completed REACH-Fitbit participant quotes

"I just like doing it, it would let me keep up with my miles, my food, like my heart rate and everything. Especially by me being at work, it’ll let me know when I need to take a break and stuff. So it’s actually really good for you."

I had a high-risk pregnancy as well. So, I did like the steps because it would tell me when I was a little bit more active in a day than I would be other days.

What did we learn?

Thanks to our 402 participants, we are learning about how physical activity during pregnancy can help mom and baby. Continue to check back for updates on published scientific papers, using our REACH-Fitbit data.

First, we listened to our participants to make the study better by understanding their experiences during pregnancy and what it was like to utilize the Fitbit. Focus group participants reported positive feelings about wearing a Fitbit and helped us make our study procedures better. Explore the published findings on Sage Journals.

One of our recently published scientific papers showed how physical activity during pregnancy may be related to the bacteria in the gut (the digestive system). We used a Fitbit to track daily steps and activity, and we looked at stool samples to learn about gut bacteria. Learn more about these interesting findings on Frontiers.
