Shared Governance Councils

The Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital Shared Governance model embraces the concept of shared leadership and shared decision-making, ensuring that team members at all levels and from all practice areas are involved in making decisions that will affect their practice environment.

Our nursing shared governance structure, implemented across the organization, is a framework that empowers nurses with autonomy in the clinical & professional nursing practice. The program encompasses both inpatient and outpatient areas, as well as our other multidisciplinary teams.

  • Unit Governance Councils

The Unit Governance Councils are tasked with overseeing and making decisions related to unit-specific processes and procedures. Additional initiatives include identifying areas for improvement and implementing strategies to enhance the delivery of patient care, as well as improving patient satisfaction and nurse satisfaction.

  • Professional Development Council

The Professional Development Council collaborates closely with nursing departments to support professional development as well as research and evidence-based practice initiatives. Additionally, the council oversees the progress of research, process improvement, and quality improvement projects at West Bloomfield.

  • Nursing Practice Council

The Nurse Practice Council offers strategic guidance to support the continuous advancement of nursing practice at West Bloomfield. Its primary objective is to empower clinical nurses to uphold and implement nursing practice and patient care standards that align with evidence-based practices and comply with regulatory requirements.

  • Magnet Champion Council

The Magnet Champion Council is dedicated to fostering, advancing, and sustaining a culture of nursing and operational excellence in alignment with the standards of the Magnet Recognition Program. Furthermore, the Council is committed to cultivating a work environment that enhances nurse satisfaction and retention, acknowledging the vital role nurses play in providing outstanding patient care.

  • Coordinating Council

The Coordinating Council is responsible for overseeing the activities of the nursing shared governance councils. Their role is to ensure that decisions made by these councils align with principles of safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centered care, and equity.

  • Nurse Executive Council

The Nurse Executive Council, while not officially part of shared governance, plays a pivotal role in providing leadership and oversight for nursing councils and committees. This Council is essential in promoting professional development and recognition for nurses within the organization. Additionally, it establishes the strategic direction for nursing and promotes a culture of excellence in the profession.
