Living in Detroit and Southeastern Michigan

Henry Ford Hospital is located in Detroit, Michigan. The city is vibrant and growing. As an example of recent activity, a new stadium has been built for the Red Wings and Pistons, a new public transit rail has been built in the center of the city, and new retail outlets, apartment buildings, and restaurants have appeared all over the city. City parks like the historic Belle Isle have been restored. Midtown, where the main hospital is located, is one of the most exciting neighborhoods. It is only minutes from Downtown Detroit, and you’ll be close to the homes of the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons and Lions sports teams. Fellows can take in a Broadway musical at the historic Fox Theater, see beautiful exhibits at the Detroit Institute of Arts, attend a Detroit Symphony Orchestra or Opera event, or learn more about the history of the city at the Detroit Historical Museum. Take a stroll down the Riverfront or enjoy many of the new bike lanes all over the city. Detroit has the major cultural and recreational attractions of the greatest world cities. All of this in an environment where the cost of living is very reasonable.

As a physician in the city you will have the opportunity to have a huge impact on our community. Henry Ford is a secular, non-profit, academic institution dedicated to helping all, and that ethos is ever present in everything that you will do. The patients you see here will come from our health insurance company (HAP), third party insurers, the suburbs, the region (we are a regional referral center), as well as all the areas of Detroit, so you will have a very diverse mix of patients. There has never been a better time to be in Detroit and at Henry Ford, and we look forward to welcoming you here.

In addition to all of the great venues available in Detroit, there are so many wonderful things about living in Michigan:

  • Michigan boasts many outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, golfing, sailing, skiing and cycling with beautiful state parks and recreational areas
  • Detroit’s suburbs are among the most beautiful in the nation with some of the best school systems in the country (both private and public).
  • The Detroit metropolitan area is very multi-cultural with many ethnic groups in the region.
  • It may also be helpful to know that on-site day care is available to Henry Ford employees.
