What to Expect

Curriculum

The fellow has continuous time in the operating room and clinic. There are weekly didactic lectures that follow a rigorous curriculum. The fellow also interacts with the residents in a teaching capacity. Our fellow spends 2 weeks with Musculoskeletal Radiology for expertise in imaging interpretation and hands on ultra-sound.

The fellow will rotate with fellowship trained Faculty. We have a Level 1 hospital and a community hospital to gain experience in multiple settings. This allows a robust elective schedule as well as complex multi -ligament knee reconstruction in the trauma setting. We believe strongly in complete care of our patients, and the fellow will work closely with our physical therapists and athletic trainers to maximize recovery. We provide an extensive exposure to shoulder reconstruction and some knee arthroplasty. The fellow also participates in several away courses for specialized educational lab experience such as a cartilage course and hip preservation.

Rotations

The fellow spends an allotted time with each sports’ attending providing a diverse educational opportunity. There are rotations with our specialized musculoskeletal radiologists, exposure to primary care sports physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, team and training room coverage at the collegiate and high school level. There will also be exposure to professional team coverage.

Lecture schedules

Wednesday is the major lecture education day. Each Wednesday there is a resident sports education lecture, Grand Rounds, resident education lectures and the fellows didactic sports article review sessions. Friday mornings are hands on training for the residents. Whenever there are sports training events, the fellow is expected to assist with instruction for arthroscopy labs and other training.

Surgical, clinical, research, literature review and hands on athletic coverage.

Volumes

Our fellows complete 350-500 cases per year. Most surgical cases are knee and shoulder. There is also elbow surgery, both open and arthroscopic as well as hip arthroscopy. There is an opportunity to also spend time if desired with our foot and ankle surgeons and hand surgeons to follow our sports patients as needed.

Didactics

Weekly sessions, monthly journal club for Orthopaedics, monthly M & M, quality sports, journal club, monthly arthroscopy labs.

Qualifications

Graduation from an ACGME residency or AOA equivalent, with active accreditation pending.

One year of intense work (no call) to advance your sports medicine knowledge and arthroscopic surgical skills.
