Orthopedic & Microsurgical Hand Surgery Fellowship

About the program
We are an ACGME-accredited and ABOS-sponsored hand surgery fellowship based at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and serving the greater southeast Michigan community with dedicated experiences with the HFH Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, and Children's Hospital of Detroit. Our faculty is focused on developing a culture that educates and nurtures future hand surgeons into becoming masters of hand and upper extremity pathology as well as technically skilled surgeons. We focus not just on the technical aspect of hand surgical procedures, but also on understanding the nuances of surgical indications of hand pathologies. We hope to challenge our fellows to become involved in research that helps push our field in new directions. Finally, we hope to cultivate compassionate and caring physicians who will practice their craft with the utmost ethical standards.
The department consists of 4 orthopedically trained surgeons, 3 plastic surgery trained hand surgeons, as well as a partnership with DMC Children’s hospital, where fellows will get to work with Dr Heather Lochner, a specialist in pediatric hand issues. Our fellows will have access to anatomy and arthroscopy labs, as well as an on-site microsurgery lab.
As Henry Ford Hospital is a Level 1 trauma center and receives referrals from across the state, fellows will experience a wide variety of complex hand pathologies, both acute and chronic in nature
Our mission and vision
We aim to foster a culture that educates and nurtures future hand surgeons into becoming masters of hand and upper extremity pathology as well as technically skilled surgeons. We focus not just on the technical aspect of hand surgical procedures, but also in understanding the nuances of surgical indications of hand pathologies. We hope to challenge our fellows to become involved in research that helps push our field in new directions. Finally, we hope to cultivate compassionate and caring physicians who will practice their craft with the utmost ethical standards.
Message from program director
I am excited to offer the first ACGME accredited Orthopedic hand surgery fellowship in the state of Michigan at Henry Ford Health in collaboration with the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. We are looking for fellowship applicants interested in training with the best qualified faculty (i.e: orthopedic faculty for wrist reconstruction, wrist arthroscopy, plastic surgery faculty for microsurgical and soft tissue techniques, pediatric hand surgery faculty for pediatric conditions). Moreover, as the Vice Chair of Academics in Orthopedic Surgery as well as the System Medical Director for Value-Based Specialty Care, we have a large number of trainees working on a plethora of clinical research projects within the Hand Division. We welcome fellows to lead scholarly activities with assistance from other research trainees within the department.
