Research

All fellows in our program are required to participate research during their training. Research time is allotted over the 3 years to ensure adequate time to complete and present a project. General goals over the 3 years are as follows:

• 1st year - Fellows identify a research mentor and work with them to find a research project and complete an IRB
• 2nd year - Fellows  complete data collection or review and submit their research in abstract form to a major meeting
• 3rd year - Fellows present their research at a national meeting and prepare / submit a manuscript

Our fellows are strongly encouraged to present at national conferences during their training. Fellows also are provided coverage and funding from the program to attend at least one national conference annually. Our 1st year fellows attend DDW, our 2nd year fellows attend AASLD, and our 3rd year fellows attend ACG. Our program also hosts an annual research symposium in April where fellows can present ongoing and completed projects to the gastroenterology division to garner feedback.

Our fellows are provided several resources to assist in their research endeavors including:

• The Sladen Library provides free literature search and systematic review search services for all residents and fellows
• Fellows are eligible to use the HFH GME supported Research Support Services. Any trainee can complete the Research Consultation Approval Form available on the GME internal website. All are eligible for 10 hours of support for each project. If additional hours are needed, the Program Director can approve additional supported time. Last year, the GME office supported 1,189 hours of PHS consultation and data analysis for trainees; over 3,600 hours in the past five years
• GME provides free medical copyediting services to all residents and fellows. 
• The Sladen Library offers free manuscript preparation assistance for all fellows. Manuscript preparation services cover many types of documents such as journal articles, book chapters, grants, conference abstracts/posters, and CVs. Librarians will provide support with:
  • Verifying citations
  • Updating references within MS Word documents
  • Creating specific citation styles for your publication, poster presentation, grant, CV, and more
  • Meeting specific style and formatting guidelines required by the journal
  • Light grammar checking
• Residents and fellows can apply for up to $5,000 from the HFH GME grant fund. GME Research Grants are available to provide house officers with the opportunity to gain further experience into scientific investigation, to develop competencies in research and dissemination of findings. Any resident or fellow in training is eligible for a grant and in the last five years, HFH GME awarded $162,000 in grant funding to trainees.
