Program Highlights
Rotations and Subspecialty Services
Fellows rotate primarily at two main sites: Henry Ford Hospital (Detroit) and Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, both of which offer robust exposure to diverse patient populations and practice environments.
During the first year of fellowship, you will rotate on the General Gastroenterology Consult Service, Hepatology/Transplant Service, and Pancreaticobiliary Consult Service. These rotations provide a strong foundation in inpatient consultative gastroenterology. Outpatient participation in hepatology clinic, transplant clinic, and longitudinal GI continuity clinic begins in the first year and continues throughout training.
In the second and third years, fellows continue to build upon this foundation through both inpatient and outpatient subspecialty experiences. Rotations include dedicated clinics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Pancreaticobiliary Disease, and a focused Motility rotation, where fellows gain experience interpreting esophageal and anorectal manometry and video capsule endoscopy. During outpatient blocks, fellows may also pursue elective rotations tailored to their specific career or academic interests.
Endoscopic Proficiency
Fellows perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures throughout all three years of fellowship, with progressive autonomy and technical mastery as training advances.
Training includes proficiency in upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, with additional exposure to advanced procedures through close collaboration with the therapeutic endoscopy team. Endoscopic instruction is led by expert faculty across both general and advanced therapeutic endoscopy, ensuring exposure to a broad spectrum of procedures. Fellows benefit from high procedural volumes, individualized teaching, and a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and safety.
Didactics and Research
Structured didactic education is a cornerstone of the Henry Ford GI Fellowship. Fellows participate in regularly scheduled sessions including Clinical Updates, Journal Club, Case Conferences, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences, and Board Review sessions.
Fellows are also actively involved in research and quality improvement throughout their training. Each fellow undertakes at least one scholarly project, with mentorship from faculty and access to institutional research resources. Presentation of work at regional and national conferences is highly encouraged and supported. Our fellows are provided coverage and funding from the program to attend at least one national conference (ACG, DDW or AASLD) annually. First-year fellows also attend the ASGE First-Year Fellows’ Endoscopy Course each August.
We are proud to offer participation in a CME-accredited educational symposium hosted by Henry Ford Gastroenterology each year. This event also includes a hands-on event for fellows featuring live demonstrations and expert instruction.
