The Breast Imaging Division in the Department of Radiology at Henry Ford Health offers a one-year Fellowship in Breast Imaging. The division accepts 2-3 fellows each year. The program follows the guidelines set out by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). The Henry Ford Hospital Breast Imaging Fellowship consists of nine 4-week breast imaging rotations during which fellows may elect to also spend time in pathology, breast surgery, medical and radiation oncology. Additionally, two to three optional elective rotations are offered in the various radiology departments at Henry Ford Hospital. This large division, of 19 board certified mammographers, interprets and performs more than 90,000 breast imaging exams yearly. When combined with the over 30,000 interventional procedures, there is ample volume available for the development of subspecialized skills.\

We aim to provide fellows with a comprehensive training experience through high volumes, diverse patient population, state of the art technology and strong sub-specialty collaboration all of which contribute to high quality patient care.

In addition to our Cancer Center Pavilion, which opened in 2020 and is located across the street from main campus, there are seven more full-service diagnostic breast imaging centers (Fairlane, West Bloomfield, Lakeside, Macomb, Brownstown, Bloomfield Township, and Royal Oak), as well as multiple screening-only satellite locations. Our fellows will rotate at the Cancer Center, West Bloomfield and Fairlane locations where they will participate in Multidisciplinary breast clinic care, Tumor boards, MRI biopsies, Molecular Breast Imaging, Contrast Enhanced Mammography and Contrast enhanced upright stereotactic biopsies among many other robust training experiences.

Fellows are assigned to a single attending each day with a dedicated schedule of diagnostics and/or procedures. Screening mammograms are also read each day. Notably, residents rotate predominantly at our Cancer Center and Fairlane locations (rarely West Bloomfield) and will also each be assigned to their own attending and daily schedule. This ensures both residents and fellows the opportunity to participate in high volume procedures and diagnostic cases while working closely with attending staff.

Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary tumor board meetings which occur weekly in West Bloomfield and at the Cancer Center. When assigned to a tumor board, fellows will have dedicated time to review tumor board cases independently as well as with their attending prior to presenting. With emphasis on education, fellows will be part of monthly rad-path journal club and interesting case conference presented with the pathology department. Additionally, our institution takes part in the national fellowship consortium providing our trainees fellow-level weekly virtual lectures on a national scale with rotating host institutions.

Our Breast Imaging division is on the leading edge of emerging modalities as we participate in multicenter clinical trials including Molecular Breast Imaging, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) with additional projects up and coming, such as with Contrast enhanced mammography. We require each fellow to be involved in at least one scholarly project during their training year. We will support our fellows research interest and time requirements with attending oversight, resident and/or medical student involvement, collaboration with breast surgery and pathology departments, as well dedicated research time as needed.

Our breast fellows have historically gone on to be recruited into both academic and private practices, both in Michigan as well as out of state. Many of our fellows have even chosen to stay at Henry Ford when given the opportunity due to our collegial and flourishing Breast Imaging division.

Henry Ford Hospital is a large multi-specialty academic practice, ranked in the top 50 Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report in multiple specialty areas every year. Our physicians are consistently selected by physician peers as “top doctors” in local and national surveys, and our physicians lead many national and state medical organizations. Henry Ford Health is committed to hiring, advancing, and fairly treating all individuals, without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, weight/height, marital status, familial status, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The Breast Imaging Fellowship provides highly specialized, comprehensive, training in all aspects of Breast Imaging, including:

  • Digital Mammography and Tomosynthesis
  • Breast and Axillary targeted Ultrasound
  • Breast MRI (3 Tesla)
  • Contrast Enhanced Mammography
  • Molecular Breast Imaging
  • Image-guided Procedures:
    • Biopsies via US, upright and prone DBT/stereotactic, and MRI guidance
    • Magseed localizations via US, stereotactic and MRI guidance
    • Aspirations and tissue marker placements

State-of-the-art equipment includes GE and Hologic digital mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis, GE and Phillips ultrasound, GE and Phillips MRI, GE Contrast enhanced mammography as well as Molecular breast imaging (MBI). We offer education in three different stereotactic-guided vacuum guided assisted biopsy systems (Hologic Affirm, Suros, upright GE Serena Bright).
