What to Expect

Over the course of two years, the fellowship program is dedicated to train qualified pediatricians and internists in the art and science of allergy, asthma and clinical immunology so as to meet the requirements of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and enable the trainees to practice the specialty of allergy and immunology at a high level of competency.

Fellows will gain experience in the following areas:

  • chronic and recurrent rhinitis and sinusitis
  • allergic rhinitis
  • asthma
  • urticaria
  • food allergy
  • medication allergy
  • allergy related skin conditions
  • immunologic dysfunction
  • anaphylaxis
  • stinging insect allergy

Proficiency will be achieved in:

  • immediate hypersensitivity skin testing and interpretation
  • delayed hypersensitivity skin testing and interpretation
  • allergy immunotherapy preparation and administration
  • oral drug desensitization
  • interpretation of chest and sinus imaging studies
  • spirometric testing and interpretation
  • administration of IVIg
  • exercise and methacholine challenge
  • interpretation and rational use of laboratory assays

Rotations thru the departments of pulmonary medicine, rheumatology, dermatology, otolaryngology and renal and liver transplant are provided at the main campus. Inpatient pediatric consultations and pediatric rotations in rheumatology and HIV clinic are coordinated with the Children's' Hospital of Michigan. Introduction to laboratory procedures and interpretation of results is taught in the first year and a graduate level immunology course is taught at the Wayne State University.

Didactic instruction is provided each Wednesday and Friday morning with Journal Club, Case Review, Biostatistic lectures, Epidemiology review, Board Review and business reports.
