The Henry Ford Hospital Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-year, ACGME approved cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship. The program has two positions available annually for highly qualified applicants interested in advanced training in this exciting field. In addition, a dual cardiothoracic anesthesiology/critical care fellowship is available for highly qualified applicants.

The program aims to mentor the next generation of leaders in cardiothoracic anesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography. Completing our program will prepare the trainee for the most complex level of practice, whether academic or private.

We have a well-developed weekly fellow didactic program with special emphasis on intra-operative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and advanced topics in cardiothoracic anesthesia and critical care. In addition, there are informal TEE rounds held regularly to further enhance TEE skills.

The fellows are heavily involved in resident education. They facilitate weekly PBLDs for our residents rotating through cardiac anesthesia. Fellows have full access to our state-of-the-art TEE simulator to use for their own education or to use as a tool in teaching residents about TEE.

The fellow is exposed to a broad variety of cardiac surgical procedures on par with any academic cardiothoracic fellowship in the country. The Henry Ford Hospital Cardiothoracic Surgery Division performs approximately five hundred open heart surgeries a year, including heart and lung transplantation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, adult congenital surgery, ventricular assist device placement, thoracic aortic procedures with and without circulatory arrest, as well as the full gamut of valve and coronary revascularization procedures.

In addition to a robust surgical program, the fellow is exposed to a high-volume world renown structural heart program that includes transcatheter aortic valve replacement, mitral clips, transcatheter mitral valve replacement, transcatheter tricuspid replacements etc. In addition, there is a busy electrophysiology that performs high risk lead extractions, high risk ablations, and TEE guided watchman procedures.

Our cardiothoracic anesthesiologists are dedicated clinicians and educators who have trained in some of the best programs around the country. All have extensive TEE experience.
